The Historic deWitt Cottage opened its doors to reality television on Saturday, August 20, 2019. Producers from Sharp Entertainment in conjunction with Virginia Beach Weddings by Primo Events filmed the season finale of a reality TV show inside and in the gardens of the Cottage. Reality shows are known for drama and thankfully ours was minimal, missing wedding bands. They were quickly found and the ceremony and reception continued as planned. Our bride was the first to enjoy our new “Bridal dressing room” designed in the style and time of the deWitt sisters. The episode will air this fall. This was a huge opportunity for the Cottage and Museum to gain visibility as a preferred venue for the television and film industry. A huge thank you to Museum and Shore Gallery Gift Shop staff, our Custodian, Thomas, and our Garden volunteers. In addition, I would like to thank Ron and Shawn Form of Primo Events for providing this opportunity to us. (Due to confidentiality, we cannot reveal the show until the week it broadcasts.)

On May 31, 2019 our hometown suffered a horrific tragedy! The workplace shooting in Building #2 of the Princess Anne Municipal Complex! It changed the lives of hundreds of people forever; but, it especially changed the lives of the families who lost loved ones and it impacted the families of those who were critically injured. A Tragedy Fund was established by the City through the United Way to financially assist all of the families that were impacted. So far that fund has collected more than 3.5 million dollars. We here at the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum want to do our part to help these families heal. We are producing a black enamel ribbon pin trimmed in gold with the gold letters #VBSTRONG on it. The ribbon pins will be available through our Website: awhm.org and online gift shop, in the museum’s Shore Gallery Seaside gift shop, from an Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum Board Member, or at The Shore Gallery Store located at 1556 Laskin Road Suite 138 in Hilltop North Shopping Center. The pins will be free. We simply ask that you make a onetime donation for the Virginia Beach Tragedy Fund. We want to make sure that the flow of money into this fund never stops and that we never ever forget these families.
This weekend the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum will be hosting a wedding party and a reality tv show from WE tv! Be sure to watch the episode featuring our own Virginia Beach Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum this upcoming August when the show will return to television.

“Love After Lockup, the explosive docuseries is back for a second season, exploring new shocking and revealing stories of couples who fall in love despite the prison bars between them. Once the bars are gone, will their love survive after lockup on the rocky road to the altar? Will the inmates ditch their mate as they face shocking “firsts,” fights & family drama! Is it true love or just a con?
From the producers of the hit show 90 Day Fiancé, this season of “LOVE AFTER LOCKUP” will follow six couples, as they share the emotional journey of being united for the first time after years of supervised visits. Last season, two couples were left in limbo as their hopes and dreams were put on hold due to release date complications. This season, their stories continue to unfold along with four new couples who embark on their journey from love behind bars to the marriage at the altar. Season two promises more drama, deception, and surprises!” - WE tv
As you can see from the pictures below, the garden is just starting to bloom into its full glory. A lot of hard work has been put in by the members of the deWitt Cottage Garden Club. The gardens have been cleaned up, expanded, and had new plants added. If you have any desire to garden, please consider joining the deWitt Cottage Garden Club. It is an opportunity to learn how to garden in a hostile, saltwater environment from Master Gardeners.
Shore Gallery at deWitt Cottage has taken up residency in the AWHM. Their presence, vision, updates, and enhanced merchandise will greatly add to our beloved museum and will complement our “flavor” well. Kathy and Sean Rooney have a proven record of accomplishment in the Hampton Roads area and we are excited to enter into this new chapter with them. I would be remorse if I did not take an opportunity to thank Mrs. Ann Smith for years of service, dedication, and love for the AWHM. In addition to her service as our old gift shop manager, Ann was a staple at special events, fundraisers, and as a welcoming face at the front for visitors and locals alike.
Thank you to all of our friends, family and fans that voted for us across so many categories in the 2019 Coastal Virginia Magazine Best of Readers' Choice Awards!
