BIRDERS

Some of our Museum members enjoy watching birds and occasionally get together to view birds locally or nearby areas of Virginia and North Carolina. We offer visitors to the Museum information about local birding “hotspots” and have a notebook with some of our sightings on past outings. From the Museum grounds we have identified 65 species of birds since we began keeping a record in 2003. A complete list of birds identified is available in the Museum. Here are some “highlights” of our sightings: Loons, Gannets, Scoters, Buffleheads, Mergansers, American Oystercatcher, numerous shorebirds, swallows, warblers, sparrows and raptors that including Bald Eagle, Osprey & American Kestrel.

We have also been participating in a “bird survey” for Red Wing Lake Golf Course. The golf course and the City of Virginia Beach in conjunction with Audubon International are attempting to make the course more environmentally friendly and part of this process involves a wildlife survey. As of June 2011 we have identified 134 bird species.
